If you were to ask almost any one interested in bushcraft who they would most like to meet and study with,   Mors Kochanski would probably be very high on their list.

Famous for his book “Northern Bushcraft” published in 1987 he is widely acknowledged as one of the world’s finest bushcraft instructors and has been an inspiration to bushcraft writers ever since.

I can also tell you he is really nice guy with more stories to tell than Jackanory.

I was fortunate enough to attend one of his courses organised by Bushcraft UK at the 2008 Bushmoot.

I didn’t have the opportunity to take many photos while working with him but here are a few of him demonstrating the Kochanski Flip Flop Winch which he used to effortlessly drag a car over chocks and then twenty feet of dirt track.

The setting up of the Kochanski Winch is deceptively simple but once set, the long poles provide huge leverage.

Lifting each pole successively up and over the other pole, slowly winds the rope onto the winch to provide all the power needed to pull a car or other heavy object free from an obstruction.

I can think of a couple of times I could have done with knowing this little trick myself in the past and this was just one of many useful things I picked up in his highly entertaining company.
